Latin America’s Top Mining Companies 2016

The mining kings in Latin America may well be dethroned in the near future, as the commodity price rout has hit the revenues of some of the biggest firms, while opening up opportunities for the smaller players.
For Brazil-based Vale, the largest miner in the region, the situation is particularly tough.
Even though Vale ranked number one in Latin Trade’s new Top Mining Companies –which lists the region’s largest mining firms by revenues– its overall numbers have been declining for past years. In the nine months from January to September 2015, the company reported revenues of $15.6 billion, compared with the $16 billion from the same period a year before.
In fact, due to its $8.5 billion in losses in the fourth-quarter of 2015, Vale announced in February its plans to sell major assets.
But still, Vale’s revenues almost double those of the ranking’s second company, Chile’s Codelco, with $8.7 billion for the first nine months of 2015. However, Codelco’s revenues grew only by a small margin, compared with the $8.6 billion from the same period in 2014.
The overall poor performance means companies will likely continue to sell assets or look for partnerships, a situation that many of the smaller firms can use to their advantage.
