As Trump talks wall, China is building bridges to Latin America
An expected U.S. economic retreat from Latin America under Donald Trump is causing the region’s leaders to look halfway around the world, to China, for help weathering the possible financial headwinds. They’ll have the perfect opportunity to make their appeal this week when Chinese President Xi Jinping attends a Pacific Rim summit as part of a visit to Ecuador, Peru and Chile, ABC News reports.
Peru shines amid Latin America woes
Peru kicked off a major conference in the capital city of Lima on Thursday. President Obama and President Xi Jinping of China, among many other world leaders, are attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit. Peru is currently Latin America’s fastest growing country. “Peru’s rise has been among the best kept secrets in Latin America,” Eric Farnsworth, vice president at Council of the Americas said, CNN reports.
Bid backed by Chinese capital wins Mexico telecom tender
Mexico on Thursday declared a group backed by Chinese capital and a fund run by Morgan Stanley Infrastructure as the winner of a tender to build and run a national wholesale mobile network. The contract award marks the end of a saga around the ambitious tender, which was delayed several times, disputed by one participant and in the end had only one qualified bidder, Reuters reports.
