A disquieting retail slump stalls the region’s recovery: the Multilatina Index 4Q21

The 22% YoY leap in revenues for a sample of Latin American companies that sell more than $500 million, was enough to make 4Q21 better than pre-pandemic 4Q19. Total revenues climbed 5.6% in 4Q21 from 4Q19. Peruvian tin and gold miner Minsur, more than doubled its fourth quarter revenues in 2021, compared to the same quarter in 2019. The hike was caused by increased tin production, and by a dramatic surge in world tin prices. Brazilian retailer Americanas increased its revenues by 68% over the two year period. The result was consequence of a merger between Lojas Americanas and B2W in July 2021. It was, to a much lesser extent, helped by a 30% increase in digital sales in 2021. […]
