Increasingly, cross border commerce is being facilitated through the internet.

E-commerce is booming in Latin America, and an increasing share of that is taking place across borders. Secure pay sites such as PayPal are making it increasingly convenient and secure for that trade to take place.A recent study by the company estimates that global cross-border e-commerce should grow 24 percent a year, reaching $307 billion by 2018. Emerging markets, especially Latin America, will see even faster rates of growth as technology and internet penetration grow in those markets. This represents an important opportunity for the region’s exporters, logistics companies, and a boon for the region’s consumers. LBC spoke with PayPal’s José Fernández da Ponte, Director of International Trade for Latin America, about some of these developments.
