Latin America could supply 100% of its power from renewable sources

The region has a “fantastic endowment” for renewable energy, but regulatory and policy barriers impede its implementation.

Latin America has a fantastic endowment for renewable energy, and could meet 100 percent of its energy needs from renewable sources. Beyond the obvious environmental benefits, the introduction of renewable energy sources could have important economic, development, and health benefits as well. These are the findings of a recent study from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB): “Rethinking Our Energy Future.” The lead author from that study, Walter Vergara, spoke with Latin Business Chronicle about what is necessary for Latin America and the Caribbean to make that change, and why now is the perfect time to make that change.
