The region is witness to a neck-to-neck competition among retail giants Wal-Mart de Mexico and Brazilian CBD. While 2010 figures had Wal-Mart leading the ranking with $27.2 billion in revenues and CBD in third place with $19.2 billion, by year-end 2011 the distance had narrowed. Wal-Mart reported a slight revenue increase to $27.3 billion but CBD climbed to second place and reported $24.8 billion.
A consolidated Carrefour fell to third place with Latin revenues of $19.5 billion in 2011, from $23.3 billion in 2010. It lost more ground in 2012 since it sold its Colombian operation which gave the company $2 billion in revenues in 2011.
