PANAMA CITY -- After flying over skyscrapers and cargo ships waiting to enter the Panama Canal, the first view upon landing in Panama is the modestly built Tocumen airport, a no-frills hub that mostly serves to connect passengers to other flights. Until a few months ago, there were just a handful of duty free-shops and one restaurant. Visitors couldnt buy a newspaper or last minute gift, like a post card, to prove theyd been in Panama.
