Chickens in China Made in Brazil

Brazil's exports of poultry to China jumped last year and is expected to continue soaring the next few years.

SHANGHAI -- With 1.3 billion mouths to feed and living standards on the rise, China is eating a lot more meat these days-- everything from moo shu pork to Kentucky Fried Chicken-- and Brazilian producers are pulling up a chair to the table.

 

Brazils chicken and pork exporters in particular see mainland China as a promising new partner with a healthy, potentially huge, appetite. Chinas population grew by about 17 percent during the 20-year period from 1990 to 2010, while GDP per capita grew by a staggering 1,183 percent over the same period.

 

That new wealth has fueled demand for Buicks, Louis Vuitton bags and high-rise apartments-- and also a better diet, with more meat on the plate. As the worlds largest poultry exporter, its third largest poultry producer, and a major pork producer to boot, Brazil seems perfectly poised to take advantage.
