Latin Business Chronicle ranks Latin America’s Top 100 Employers.

Companhia Brasileira de Distribuicao Grupo Pao de Acucar (CBD), the Brazilian retailer in the midst of an intense dispute between French retailers Casino and Carrefour, is Brazil’s top employer, according to the second annual ranking of Latin America’s Top 100 Employers from Latin Business Chronicle.
With nearly 145,000 employees, it ranks ahead of other Brazilian companies such as construction giant Odebrecht, BR Foods and Itau Unibanco. It also means that CBD has more than twice as many employees as Carrefour in Brazil – 71,890.
Thanks to a 70 percent increase in its labor pool from 2009 to 2010, CBD jumped from 12th to sixth place on the ranking of Latin America’s top employers.
CBD isn’t the only retailer among the top employers. In fact, the list is headed up by U.S.-based retailer Walmart and its Mexican unit Walmex. Meanwhile, Chilean Cencosud also made the top ten.
Retailers are also the largest group on the ranking, accounting for 20 of the top 100 employers. By comparison, food companies accounted for 11, technology companies for nine and energy and manufacturing for seven each.
