Latin America: Billionaire Fortunes Jump

The estimated fortune of Latin America's billionaires jumped nearly 50 percent the past year.

Latin America’s billionaires -- led by the world’s richest man, Carlos Slim of Mexico  – increased their wealth at break-neck speed last year, faster than the buoyant growth in the region’s economy.

The net worth of the Latin billionaires jumped a whopping 47 percent in the year ended Feb. 14, more than seven times the economic growth rate in the region. Their wealth reached $333.2 billion, just short of the annual output of rising stars Chile and Peru combined, according to a Latin Business Chronicle analysis of the latest billionaire rankings from Forbes magazine.
