Brazil's economic growth expposes the country's educational weakness.

SAO PAULO --  Brazil faces many challenges as it strives to become a major economic power but perhaps its biggest impediment is the poor state of education.

The recent spurt of economic growth has aggravated the shortage of skilled workers, highlighting where Brazil loses out to other rising global competitors such as China and South Korea.

As a result, big local companies like Randon, a $2 billion engineering group, spend millions each year tutoring employees on everything from basic reading and writing to advanced geology in order to ensure a workforce with the necessary skills.
