Peru: Claro Boosts Business

America Movil is giving Telefonica a run for its money in Peru's wireless market.


LIMA —  Although Telefónica del Perú has been the dominant wireless carrier since it came to Peru in 1994, rival Claro is rapidly gaining clout.

“Ever since we entered the market we have invested heavily in expanding our network and applying structural changes within the company,” says Humberto Chávez, CEO of Claro Peru, the wireless phone brand owned by Mexican telecom group America Móvil. “In a way we’ve encouraged the current operators to invest more than what was expected from them.”
