Canada-LatAm Trade: Peru, Ecuador Lead

Peru and Ecuador lead growth in Canada trade, but Mexico remains the top partner.



Peru and Ecuador are the big winners in Canadian trade with Latin America, according to a Latin Business Chronicle analysis of data from Statistics Canada.


Peru led the way in terms of growth in buying Canadian products last year, while Ecuador led in terms of overall trade growth. Meanwhile, Panama had the strongest increase in terms of exports to Canada.

Canada’s trade with Mexico, its top partner in Latin America, fell less than it did with Brazil, its second-largest partner.

And in a promising start for Canada-Colombia relations,
Colombia posted Latin America’s third-highest Canada trade growth rate last year. Canadian lawmakers in June approved the Colombia-Canada free trade agreement.

Overall, Canada’s trade with Latin America declined last year by 12 percent to 38.2 billion Canadian dollars (US$33.4 billion).  Canada’s exports to Latin America fell 25.3 percent to ...
