Panama Canal: More Traffic

The Panama Canal boosts traffic, but its recent toll announcement may deter future usage.

The Panama Canal last week released figures for its fiscal first quarter of 2006, which ended December 2006. The results show an increase of 11.7 percent in tonnage to 79.9 million. The number of canal transits grew by 8.0 percent to 3,568 transits. That included an even stronger growth of supertankers (larger ships that require greater time and navigation skills to transit the Canal), which grew by 14.6 percent to 1,968 transits.
