Today it is estimated that over 50 percent of all kidnappings throughout the world occur in Latin America. Nearly half of these incidents occur in Mexico making it the number one kidnapping capital of the world. What is disturbing is that two other Latin American countries, Brazil and Colombia are usually among the top five in yearly kidnapping totals.
Other Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Ecuador, and Peru also have a higher than normal level of kidnapping incidents. The level of violence associated with kidnappings throughout Latin America is also more pervasive than in other countries, with Mexico being the most violent.
