Latin Business Index 2015

The Latin Business Index, a measure of overall conditions for conducting business in Latin America, reflects more challenging conditions across the region. But some countries climbed to higher spots in the ranking compared with last year, thanks to reforms, improvements to their political environment or corporate regulations.
The index analyzes five categories: macroeconomic environment, corporate environment, globalization and competitiveness, infrastructure level, and political environment.
Chile and Panama continue to lead the Index, ranking first and second, the same positions as in 2014. Chile’s strength remains largely based on sound corporate and political environments, reflecting favorable tax and labor laws, ease of doing business, economic freedom and incentives to entrepreneurship, as well as strong political institutions.
 
Panama’s position is supported by its macroeconomic environment, globalization and competitiveness, and infrastructure. Some of the main factors supporting these categories include the expectation of sustained high gross domestic product growth rates in 2015-16, open foreign trade, and continued infrastructure improvements.
 
Mexico advanced one place, to number three, displacing Peru, which is now fourth. This move owes to the positive impact of recent reforms by the Mexican government to promote economic freedom, thus making Mexico’s corporate environment one of the best in the region, second only to …
