Latin America: Walmart Largest Employer

Walmart, Pemex and Femsa are the top employers in Latin America.

Although oil giants Petrobras of Brazil and Pemex of Mexico rank as Latin America’s largest companies in revenues on the Latin 500, they are not the top employers.
 
The single largest employer in Latin America is US-based retailer Walmart, according to the first annual ranking of Latin America’s Top 100 Employers from Latin Business Chronicle.
 
The company employs a whopping 326,136 people in Latin America.  Nearly half of those work in Mexico alone, where Walmart de Mexico, is the country’s top employer, with 176,463 people. That compares with 145,146 employed at Pemex, the state oil company which ranks as the third-largest employer in Latin America.
 
Although Brazil’s population is larger, Mexico dominates the ranking. Of the top five employers in Latin America, four are from Mexico.  It also accounts for 23 of the top 60 employers in the region versus 18 from Brazil.
 
In addition to its large Mexican staff, Walmart also employs 75,927 people in Brazil, 35,494 in Chile, 29,224 in Central America and 9,028 in Argentina. All in all, Walmart employs a whopping 326,136 people in Latin America, according to data from December 2009. To put that into perspective. That’s almost as many employees as Fedex and Starbucks have in the United States combined.
