BIG DATA, a new star is rising in corporate management

Big data, or the collection and handling of huge amounts of information, is transforming the way corporations and governments around the world are conducting business. And Latin America, until recently a laggard, is catching up at breakneck speed, according to key industry players.
Regional leaders Brazil, Mexico and Colombia are adopting big data at a rate two to three times faster than the global rate, said Jeff Cotrupe, industry director for big data and analytics at the Stratecast / Frost & Sullivan research service.  While global big data usage is expected to rise at a 10.5 percent annual clip through 2019, growth in these three nations is forecast to shoot up by 31.2 percent over the same period. According to a recent Frost & Sullivan report, this rapid growth will take the three leaders’ combined revenue from big data usage from $604 million in 2014 to the tune of $2.3 billion by 2019.
“Latin America is a growth star,” Cotrupe said. In regional powerhouse Brazil, a Frost & Sullivan survey of more than 300 companies revealed that 10 percent of firms have already invested in planning and consulting projects, sketching roadmaps to help them figure out how best to profit from big data collection and analysis. Moreover, by the end of 2015, one in every three Brazilian firms will have invested in big data solutions, the survey found.
